Trading Art Card Project - Preview By Festival Girl

I can't seem to find too much information on the Trading Art Card Project, however, I absolutely love the concept. So what's supposed to happen is Artists of all kinds join in, put their Art on playing cards, to create miniature works of art created on 64x89mm card stock. They are all originals and self produced and the best thing is, anybody can produce them. So each Artist can exchange and can have a tiny piece of art from their fellow Artists - get it. Cute isn't it.

This actually reminds me of my University Graduation catalogue. We decided to scrap the idea of having a normal bound book of each students blurb and image about their final piece, and place all that information and printing them on to playing cards and encased them in a perspex box. This wasn't really everyone's cup of tea, but I loved the idea. and being poor Uni students, actually saved us A LOT of money in printing.

I got these from the Love Vintage Show. I think they are the jokers from a pack of cards.

Details:
Where: Barratt Galleries5 Bugden Avenue, Alstonville, NSW, 2477
When: Daily from 14 Dec 2010 until 30 Jan 2011

As this one is a little out my travelling circle, please let me know if you attend and I'll put up your pics. This is a really clever idea and would love to see this come to Sydney.

Rozelle Markets | Review by Festival Girl

Festival Girl Rates: 7/10

On my recent trip to the hairdresser, I decided to head to the Rozelle Markets in Rozelle. It was a beautiful Saturday and hot as all hell.

One of my favourite things in the world is to go to markets.

It's not only free entertainment and a chance for some good exercise, for me, it's a thrill and a bit of excitement as you never know what you will find.

I really relish the concept of finding something old, discarded and unwanted and becoming something valued and given a second life.

As I was nearly about to pass out from the heat, I decided to take a breather and enjoy my mango gelato. Nom nom nom

So many colours

A local band serenades the passers by

Loved the buddha scarf hanging in the background

I am the biggest fan of kitsch items; especially vintage home items and toys. Toby the robot walks and moves it's head and arms. I can just sit and stare at these kitschalicious things all day.

Tandy made robots? Who'd a thunk it. Robie Junior Robot was probably before my time, but reminds me of Flight of the Conchords track but The distant future, the distant future...The humans are dead...

I found a cute designers Mollusc Design. They (really) make unique, handmade jewellery. I mean, everyone claims their pieces are different, but these guys are. I love the sense of fun, playfulness in the pieces, using found objects and up cycling them into fashionable statement pieces.

Also I noticed Linda Natalie Jewellery and Design with her bold pink colour scheme, is a small retailer working on growing her brand. She mentioned she displaying her jewellery at next week's Young Australian Designers Markets in Paddington which should hopefully give her the exposure she is after.

This stall was so cute, I ended up buying two bags for $10.

I've always wanted a silver glomesh clutch. I've resisted the temptation in buying ones from retailers as I have been after a vintage one. Finally, I have found. A Whiting and Davis dating back a few decades.Yay. And for only $5.

I am a sucker for multicultural clothing and costumes. I love these old postcard style images which are actually old Advertisements selling all sorts of things like cigarette, shoes and tea. I'm going to frame these ones. Here is a really great site for digitally remastered versions.

Looks familar, doesn't he?  He very closely resembles the logo for Nandos. I love all things hand painted, wooden and Roosters - so, I knew I had to have him when I saw him. I shall call him, Nando.

This is a Spanish dancer doll I also obtained for a few dollars.

She is actually really tiny, about 15cm tall only. She is detailed though, delicate lace, gold hoop earrings and tiny red dancer shoes.

For all you budding photographers, here is a great chance to show your skills

I'm kicking myself for not bringing my SLR along, but if you are a keen photographer the Rozelle markets are having an amateur Photographic competition. With the 1st prize being $500, all you need to do is best capture the colour, character and creativity of the Rozelle Markets. The competition finished 16th January, so hurry.

Queensland Floods Donations Welcome

Image courtesy of Courtney Trenwith: SMH
It's absolutely astonishing what is happening in Queensland. I mean, every time I turn on the TV, listen to the radio or read a paper -the most shocking thing Australia has experienced in decades - Queensland is underwater.

I can't even imagine what it is like to be in the situation of those affected; the family members, the friends and the community. Imagine seeing your car or your bed floating down the river; these people have lost everything. Not only possessions but loved ones also. The floods have taken the lives of a number of Australians and many are still missing.

What is the most positive thing to come from this disaster (if there is one) is how Australia is pulling together and helping each other to get the nation through the devastation. People are doing everything they can to get through it and look to when they can start to rebuild.

Queensland need our support. They are crying for help and we need to hold out a helping hand. People need basics; food, water, clothing and ironically, there are fears of drinking water shortages, so water. If you can spare it, we can help by donating our time and money

How can we help?

You can also help with temporory animal accomodation:

My heart goes out to those affected. I hope we can all pull together to help our fellow Australia's in this time of need.

Sydney Festival | Review by Festival Girl

Festival Girl Rates: 8.5/10

Okay, so I've only been able to review day one of the Sydney Festival, but what a perfect night it was. The event on Saturday night had over a million people attending and is the event everyone is raving about. This a great FREE event to bring the family, a loved one, that special someone or just your best mates to hang out, get some culture and have a good time. This the time to let loose and dance around in circles barefoot.

The crowd was entertained by a number of talented entertainers including circus company Circa, Ali Mills and The Ukeladies, Eddie Perfect, Arrested Development, Smoke and Mirrors plus heaps more.

Highlights:

First stop: Hyde Park. I mananged to catch The Dynamites Featuring soul man Charles Walker, and man, can he sing! As we finally arrived to meet some of our friends, after spending too many split seconds standing to greet our friends, I was (rudely) told to 'sit down' by a couple watching the show. There's nothing more annoying than those people, the shushers. Thank you Mr Seinfeld.

Walking around Hyde Park, the trees were lit up with colours lights as foam fans pushed the wonderful foam around as people weaved the walk ways. It felt like I had suddenly walked into a foam party and almost expected shiny disco balls to drop from the sky. Well, there actually were disco balls. I guess the event had everything.

Festival First Night decor reminded me of a circus wonderland where even the ancient trees were dressed in sequins for the night.

The prepared festival goers (not me) bought picnic blankets, beach chairs, box of wine (ssh, don't tell anyone) and some nibblies.

Such a serene sight to see city goers sitting, grooving to the music and having  a cruisey evening. ANZ who I presume were sponsorhing the event, wee giving out these nifty fans with light up message. 1) I wish I could turn off the light, as it was blinding me when I wanted to fan myself. 2) Me feels the 'subliminal' messaging was a bit too, in my face; pardon the pun.

Perhaps Silverchair said it best; Across the night, was the moon that stole my slumber
Across the night, I fell in love with people sleeping. What a crazy night. The weather was perfect but many were prepared for rain but really, not even a drop. 0 - Sydney weather: 1 -Sydney goers.

We ended the night at the domain, to see Arrested Development, not the show, but the band. You may remember them from this song.

With major roads were closed, the Festival First Night let the people reclaim the streets. In fact, it kind of reminded me of an apocalyptic Zombieland world where zombies were roaming the streets.

Walking along William Street, I nearly had a heart attack when fireworks went off at the Australian Museum for the Your Name in Lights presentation by conceptual artist John Baldessari. A very sucessful work I might add as passers by were mesmerised and shrieking with delight when their name appeared. If you want your name up in lights too, you can Register here.

Meanwhile...

At Chifley Square, New Zealand artist Michel Tuffery M.N.Z.M. presents First Contact, a 12-storey high multi-media projection artwork based on Captain Cook's exploration of the South Pacific. A live soundtrack is provided by DJ NOMAD alongside SouthPacific dancers and drummers.

Over at The Domain Nukkan Ya Ruby celebrates the life and music of Ngarrindjeri singer-songwriter Ruby Hunter. Archie Roach heads a line-up that includes Amos Roach, Dave Arden, Paul Kelly, Renee Geyer, Tiddas and Dan Sultan, with director Rhoda Roberts at the helm in a triumphant celebration of one of Australia's true music legends. Then Emmylou Harris and her Red Dirt Boys are set to dazzle as they traverse Americana, bluegrass, country and folk.

Martin Place will explode with some of the best global sounds, including Hanggai from China's progressive music scene, Senegal's Daara J Family and hip-hop collective Arrested Development.

Coffee lover?

$1 coffee in Hyde Park. Download your $1 coffee voucher and present at the Republica Coffee stall at the Hyde Park Silver Screen on Saturday 8 January from 3pm - 8pm. DOWNLOAD NOW!

Lowlights:

It took us an hour and a half to find parking. That's got to be a new record. I saw people get so desperate that they tried to squish their sedan into a spot that a smart car would struggle to fit in. My advice, Leave the car at home for major events.

Also, it seemed like perhaps Cityrail and the festival organisers did not consider Sydney's West as both major train lines are having train works for much of January. A shame really.

Dammit, I missed it? Well, this particular event is over, the festival will be running through January at various locations.

Chromefest 2010 | The Entrance, Central Coast - Festival Girl Review

Festival Girl Rates: 7/10

Happy New Year everyone! On my recent short break to the Entrance, I came across Chromefest, which happens to be the Central Coast's favourite car show. I think this event was originally scheduled for October and because of some bad weather moved it early December. Ah huh, I see you've picked up on dated event. So yes, I was meant to post this in December, but you see, the holidays made me lazy and sluggish but I am back in full force for 2011 (New Years resolution)

A step back into the 1950's, feels like Super Kawaii Mama should be here

Forgive me for using my phone camera, but I was on my way to the beach and stumbled on this festival - festivals never sleep and neither does Festival Girl.

I'll Call this one Mustang Sally!

With over 8,000 visiting The Entrance on the Friday and Saturday for the annual festival of Cars, Dancing and Rock and Roll music, Chromefest is huge!

This is what a pack of Ford Mustangs look like in a wild pack. Notice the leader of the pack is showing dominance by baring his grills.

I'm not going to pretend that I am an expert on cars, or collectible cars at that, but I'll try to add my two cents and show you some of 1950's classic cars by the beach.

Elvis said it best: Well since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell... in this beautiful Chevy

This car featured here, I think its a Holden was just massive, just the biggest car of its type. I can't believe I complain about parking my Barina.

Crowds gathered and watched the Dance Demonstrations on the Sails Stage and Memorial Park Stage.

Local clubs and pubs were also packed full of visitors for their shows on the Friday and Saturday nights.

Featuring entertainment from rockabilly styled musicians and an Elvis crooner that you would swear was the real deal (only shorter and rounded and not as handsome).

Dammit I missed it?

Next years ChromeFest will be held on the 21, 22 and 23 October, 2011 at the Entrance.

Love, Festival Girl xox
